A masterpiece dating from the artist’s neo-impressionist period, Deux fenêtres de Marquayrol by Henri Martin depicts one of the artist’s most cherished landscapes. In 1900, when the artist was 40 years old, he purchased this stunning property situated in the heights of the village of Labastide-du-Vert in southwestern France. Conducive to depicting dreamlike landscapes, here the artist was at peace and the location inspired in him a new-found creativity. He moved away from his symbolist and allegorical representations, instead choosing to depict idealised landscapes. At the time the present painting was executed, Henri Martin was at the height of his artistic powers, and here he exploits his talent and immortalizes his beloved garden.
