Gustave Poetzsch moved to Paris in 1892,where he enrolled in the Académie Julian and later the Academie des Beaux Arts. He then spent the next five years, first in the studio of Luc Olivier Merson, and then under Gustavus Moreau, alongside Matisse and Camoin.

As an artist, Gustave Poetzsch embodied Belle Epoque painting. Like Jacques Émile Blanche, he often painted Parisian scenes, walks in Bagatelle park, summer afternoons on the beach of Deauville, and walks on the docks in Paris.

He exhibited often in the Independents Salons, French Artists and the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts.
